Mike Dickinson - Seraphia
Self Released - 22nd May 2021
I slept on this one when it came out, I did see it but for one reason or another I didn't pick it up. Fast forward to a recommendation from none other than DJ Space Terrapin and I found myself hitting the buy button one Bandcamp Friday.
I don't but a lot of digital only music, guess I'm a dinosaur that prefers a physical thing in their hands but for this I made an exception.
The artist mentions that there have been many releases that have flirted with an alien theme and this is just his take on the subject, I for one am glad he did, its a really well put together album with lovely melodies and soundscapes.
Beam me up Mike
Various Artists - Triplicate Tapes Vol. 4: Transcendent Structures
Triplicate Records - 1st October 2021
Triplicate have been doing a series of compilation tapes, all with a set theme and featuring many artists from their roster along with a new face or two.
For this one the theme was experimental / leftfield. I'd say it leans more towards the leftfield side of things which I like. Experimental can just be too much for me sometimes.
The line up of talent there has assured us of a really enjoyable and interesting listen and features many regulars from The Magic Window show like Survey Channel, Time Rival, Suncastle, Belial Pelegrim among others.
It's a series that is well worth investigating and there are double tape packages on offer which helps with price.
Ryan James Mawbey - Slow Wave of Long Comfort
Requiem & Simon McCorry - Joy;Division
Woodford Halse - 16th October 2021
Two amazing releases on the same day, both on the CD format (which I personally think is great) on the wonderful Woodford Halse label.
Continuing the form on this essential label, these are another couple that you should be looking to add to your collection.
bleed air - time, ferocious
Superpolar Taips - 1st October 2021
An easy listening album from Perry Como this isn't. What we do have here is a really fascinating collection of the wonderfully weird, incredibly noisy and warmly beautiful.
Out on Cologne based label Superpolar Taips this has been put together as an attempt to approach the complex subject of time and spacetime by using a range of equipment, sound sources and tape manipulation.
The sounds change, the tempo changes and this release never stops you guessing on what will come next but the amazing thing is that it still feels like a very coherent piece of work.
There are moments of pure beauty embedded in here that I think will have me coming back for me.
A really joyful and challenging (in a good way) listen.
